Year 11 English - Keeping it Kiwi

Course Description

In Keeping it Kiwi, students explore their own identity and how this is shaped by their experiences, their whānau and the people and environment around them. Students will be exposed to a range of New Zealand literature in all its forms, reading and viewing a range of texts to help develop their analytical skills by making connections between, across and beyond texts.

  • Essay writing skills - how to independently write a structured essay that addresses a studied text.
  • Explore a range of New Zealand literature, including film, novel and poetry.
  • Presentation skills - how to create an image that is fit for the purpose and the audience.
  • Share elements of our identity, creating a visual image based on our whakapapa past, present and future.
  • Reading skills - read a range of text types, to build understanding and an appreciation of New Zealand literature.
  • Closely view a New Zealand film, developing an understanding of film techniques and their purpose. 


  • Personally respond to a range of texts that we have read or viewed.
