Year 11 Product and Manufacturing

Course Description
Teacher in Charge: R. Pedersen
Students will learn a new range of skills to apply to the manufacturing and processing of a marketable product.
Students will have access to a range of options including, but not limited to, traditional textiles equipment, laser cutter, 3D printers, jewelry making tools.
The manufacturing and production industry refers to the large scale production of goods and services using manual labour and machines turning raw materials into products that meet consumers' demands. The history of manufacturing is an interesting one and whereas today the majority of goods are produced on a large-scale production line using technical equipment, this wasn’t always the case. There is a global trend for a more sustainable approach to manufacturing and in turn consumption of goods.
Students will learn the skills as individuals but apply these skills, as relevant, to a group project
Potential skills include - sewing, printing, applique, embroidery, laser cutting, jewelry assemblage, photoshop
Potential projects could include - clothing, greeting cards, jewelry, decorative gifts, games, childrens toys, pet toys
Students will develop an understanding of -material maximization / waste reduction, costing per unit, marketing and merchandising



Contributions and Equipment
Students will need to provide materials for their individual projects. There is a small fee for materials for the skills based components which will create some take home items, eg sample bracelet, small printed bag etc

- Any of the technology options would be beneficial but not essential.
- An open and inquiring mind.
- Problem solving.
- Adaptability.
- Perseverance.
