Year 12 Biology External
Teacher in Charge: C. Wati
This course is a fast-paced and broad introduction to many of the concepts in Biology covered at higher levels. The first internal standard studies Animal habitats, relationships and ecology and looks at how Animals have adapted their Gas Exchange and Circulatory systems to suit their way of life. We learn the human systems in detail and then offer student choice in researching an animal of their choice to compare to. The second internal is fair testing in Cellular Processes such as Osmosis, Photosynthesis and Respiration. Both internal standards are completed in the first half of the year. The external standards we then study are based around Cell structure, function and processes; Gene Expression and Genetic Variation.
Students going on to study Health Sciences/ Veterinary / Genetics and Research are encouraged to take this course due to the Cells unit and focus on Genetics.
• General research skills
• Planning investigations
• Collecting and processing data
• Drawing conclusions
• Evaluating practical work
• Report writing
Students in the 2020 classes have said:
"Good if you are interested in Nature, the environment, genetics and the human body"
"If you are an average student, don't be afraid to take up the challenge, a lot of content is taught and covered throughout the subject. You just need to actively do what you need to, to keep up and ask for help".
"It makes sense looking at how my body works and it is great how your teacher links it in to your life - it is also helpful for PE too and will help me going to Uni".
"It is a lot of work and goes quite quickly - I need to do homework but it is really interesting at the same time!"
