Course Description

Content: The following aspects of theatre history and theatre are taught on the fly, throughout the course. Only those elements directly related to the practical units of work are formally assessed. Students will learn:
- Theatre history, examining both the theory and practical nature of theatre history in New Zealand and in the wider western world.
- Modern theatre styles and theorists e.g. Stanislavski; Brecht, Godber.
- Improvisation
- Study of significant playwrights.
Students will be required to:
- Devise a drama
- Perform a role in a full-length play

Students will also have the opportunity to:

- Develop vocal production through formal exercises and teacher guidance.
- Participate in outside school competitions such as the Sheilah Shakespeare festival and Dare to Devise.
- Meet and interview current professional theatre, film and television practitioners (writers, directors, actors, manager, production technicians), whenever the possibility arises.
Skills: Students will extend and improve upon their drama skills and theatre knowledge. They will continue to develop their script interpretation, production and performance skills.
Budgeting and budget management skills are developed with most technical production roles.
Notes:
- A full-scale major production will depend on the demonstrated desire, reliability and commitment of the students who take the course. This will be monitored and assessed during Term One when students will be devising in groups.
- Should there not be a full-scale Graduation Production, students will still be able to secure performance credits by performing a run of a rehearsed play for an invited audience during the week allocated for production.
Students will be required to attend rehearsals outside of normal school hours and will be advised of these dates and likely times at the commencement of the course. Inability to commit to extracurricular dates will prohibit involvement in the course.
