Year 13 Pasifika Dance

Course Description

This course differs from other Year 13 Dance courses through its Pasifika dance context. There is a high degree of student led initiative.
The skills learned are the same in any Year 13 Dance course and valuable in any career that requires leadership, team work, communication skills, creativity, taking risks and stepping out of your comfort zone. These are all skills that are very sought after in any work place today.
Content:
• Duo, Trio, Group Choreography - students choreograph dances using Dance styles they are familiar with, or have learnt recently
• Perform Dance Sequences - students learn and then perform three different Pasifika dance styles for example: Hula, Sasa, Lakalaka
• Group Performance - students learn, rehearse and share a variety of Pasifika dance works and perform them to audiences. Performances to include Whangarei Pasifika Festival, Fiafia Night, and the WGHS Dance week
• View and respond to dance - with every composition and performance, students analyse the dance and evaluate the reasons for its effectiveness.
• External Examination to cover an in depth study of one Pasifika Dance Performance, for example "Black Grace" performing "TAGATA PASIFIKA"
• Demonstrate knowledge of a dance style - research the background and features of a Pasifika Dance style,
• Trip to Auckland’s Polyfest
Skills:
• Exercise imagination, find solutions to movement problems
• Think and write critically, creatively, reflectively and logically in choreography, performing and viewing
• Develop ability to negotiate and work cooperatively with others
• Develop leadership and communication skills through problem solving practical tasks as a team.
• Recognise and develop knowledge and understanding of Pasifika Cultural heritage
• Develop specific dance and movement skills, personal fitness and health, through a range of Pasifika and ethnic dance styles
Recommended Prior Learning
Satisfactory achievement in Year 10, 11 or 12 Dance, or an audition/trial dance class.

This course is eligible for subject endorsement.
This course is approved for University Entrance.
Total Credits Available: 20 credits.
Externally Assessed Credits: 4 credits.
