Course Description

The 350,000 people working in primary industries in New Zealand help feed, shelter, and clothe the world. Primary Industries have always been important to New Zealand, earning over $36 billion a year in export earnings.

Primary industries of importance to New Zealand include:

  • Agriculture – Dairy and Meat & Wool
  • Horticulture – including viticulture
  • Apiculture - Honey and beeswax products
  • Forestry
  • Seafood – including aquaculture and fishing
  • Equine 
  • Sports turf 

This course has been set up to suit a wide variety of students, therefore numerous opportunities have been available within it. This is an open entry course, this means even if students haven't taken the subject before, they can still gain success into this course.

Students wishing to go on to tertiary study (who require university entrance and/or are seeking course endorsement) will complete two internal achievement standards, which are carry out an investigation into an aspect of a New Zealand primary product or its production, research and report on the impact of factors on the profitability of a New Zealand primary product. Students will also complete two external standards which are demonstrate understanding of how market forces affect supply of and demand for New Zealand primary products and analyse a New Zealand primary production environmental issue. 

For students who wish to get straight into work, or into a farm internship/farm based training, or heading to a polytechnic, they are able to develop a course that suits their needs or interests. We have a range of unit standards available working with Telford (under the Southern Institute of Technology) that students can choose to complete. These Level 3 unit standards cover general agriculture, cattle, deer, dairy, sheep, equine, horticulture and farm dogs. Students who select this pathway must complete a minimum of 18 credits worth of content throughout the year, and may select a course of complete unit standards or could select a mixture of the achievement standards and unit standards offered. 

Students participating in this course also have the option of participating in a gateway work experience placement on a local farm or orchard. 

Students in this course have the option of participating and completing Quad bike (ATV) training worth 19 credits.
