Year 11 Science - Māra Kai

Course Description

This course supports Whangarei Girls’ High School's Māra Kai project, which integrates Mātauranga Māori fully into the course linking key concepts such as kaitiakitanga - guardianship of our space and te whānau marama (Māori astronomy), as well as exploring local tikanga into cultivation, harvesting, insecticides/pesticides, propagation and storage. The students spend time producing produce for our community while gaining valuable skills such as sowing seeds, planting out, thinning, taking cuttings, grafting, pruning, harvesting and storing. We will also establish and maintain a Māori medicinal garden, a herb garden and fruit trees. Students will have the opportunity to visit a range of community garden projects to help out and work out which practices we may want to bring back.
