Teacher in Charge: L. Neal
This course prepares students for senior Dance programmes that have both literacy credits attached and are approved for University Entrance. This course differs from other dance courses through its Pasifika dance context. There is a high degree of student led initiative. Students will learn a variety of Pasifika dance styles and techniques, for example Hula, Sasa and/or Lalalka. They will initiate choreographic ideas based on Pasifika movement, then rehearse, video and critique their own Pasifika dance styles. This is in preparation for performance at various events such as the Whangarei Pasifika Festival, WGHS Fiafia night and WGHS Dance concerts.
The skills learned are the same in any Year 10 Dance course and valuable in any career that requires leadership, team work, communication skills, creativity, taking risks and stepping out of your comfort zone. These are all skills that are very sought after in any work place today.
This is a very practical course that challenges students physically, mentally and socially.
