Course Description

This is a general NCEA Level 3 physics course. Students who take this course will learn about a range of concepts from the physical world, such as:

  • the forces involved in rotational motion and simple harmonic motion, and how motion is affected by collisions in 2-dimensions (MECHANICAL SYSTEMS)
  • capacitance, inductance, alternating current, how electricity is generated, how transformers work (ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS)
  • the properties and behaviour of waves, how musical instruments work by creating standing waves and harmonics, the doppler effect (WAVE SYSTEMS)
  • the dual nature of light, models of the hydrogen atom, and nuclear physics (MODERN PHYSICS)

Students will apply this knowledge to help improve skills such as: 

  • planning, conducting and evaluating an investigation
  • critical thinking
  • problem solving

This course suits many types of students, for example, those who have a passion for the physical world, and are maybe considering studying it at a higher level. It is also aimed at students who require physics as part of their pathway (e.g. engineering, technology, health science, relevant trade etc.), and those who are just interested in knowing more about how the world around us works.

Since this course is appropriate for students with different needs and interests, there will be an element of selection, where students can choose between standards to design a course that suits them.


Course Overview

Term 1
Topic 1: 3.1 Practical investigation (approximately 6 weeks)

Topic 2: Self selected option 1 - 3.3 Wave Systems (4 credits external) OR 3.5 Modern Physics (3 credits internal)

Term 2
Continue with self-selected option 1 (2 - 3 weeks).
Assessment in week 3 approximately (formative assessment for Wave Systems and Test for Modern Physics).

Topic 3: 3.4 Mechanical Systems (6 credit external)

Term 3
Continue with Mechanical Systems

Topic 4: Electrical Systems

Term 4
Continue with Electrical Systems

Recommended Prior Learning

Physics is communicated through multiple means: words, symbols, diagrams, and graphical representations. Mathematics is a key language in physics, and students need to have a good foundation of algebra. This means working with relationships (equations or formulae), using skills such as rearranging and substituting.

It is strongly recommended that students achieve 14 or more credits in Level 2 Physics and  Level 2 Mathematics (AS 91261 Algebra, AS 91262 Calculus, AS 91257 Graphics), as these courses will provide a good foundation for success in Level 3 Physics.

It is also recommended that all students who enrol in this course also do a Year 13 Mathematics course (13MAC, 13MAS or 13MASP).
