Course Description

Teacher in Charge:

Are you interested in Classics but haven’t taken it as an option before? This course is for new students to Classics to learn about the debauched lives of the Greek gods, and the trials and tribulations of their imperfect heroes. The purpose of this course is to provide students who are wanting to study Classics at level 3 with a sound introductory knowledge through the analysis of film, literature and art work.

  • Reading and writing - how to plan and write extended essays. Students will read chapters of the Odyssey and examine how the ideas and values of Ancient Greece are evident in the text. All assessments are written and it is strongly recommended that students are confident in their writing. 
  • Greek mythology: You will undertake an in depth examination of Ancient Greek mythology focusing on the creation of the world, the origins of mankind and the famous Olympian gods! 

  • Critical thinking - exploring ideas from ancient society and how these are reflected in modern society.  
  • Heroes: You will examine our Classical heroes, Achilles and Odysseus, through film studies. You will then draw on and analyse Classical mythology through literature to learn how these heroes reflect the world around them.
  • Communication skills - contributing to group and class discussions. Classics is a discussion based subject and students will learn through class and group discussions to develop their critical thinking of the content. Written communication is also important for success in this subject. 
  • Death and the Afterlife in Ancient Greece: The ideas of death and the afterlife will be studied in depth as well as myths of the underworld, burial rites and mythological figures of the underworld.

  • Research Skills - how to research credible information and integrate this into your written work. This is important for the assessments as well as class work.
