Year 9 Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga

Course Description

Teacher in Charge:

This programme will accommodate students that have come from Kura Kaupapa Māori, Kura ā iwi and bilingual kura and is a full year course. In Te Reo Māori me ōna Tikanga,  students will begin/continue their pathway into Te Reo Māori.  They will learn basic tikanga practices to get an understanding of Te Ao Māori and will start with learning the school karakia, waiata and the mātauranga about our school whare ‘Te Rau Aroha’. 

They will get an introduction into Te Reo Māori Assessments, Tuhinga, Whakarongo, Kōrero and Pānui to get familiar with what will be required in their pathway into Te Reo Māori me Ōna Tikanga. They can read and write straightforward versions of what they have learned to say.  Students are developing an awareness of the processes involved in learning te reo Māori.

  • Tuakiritanga - Increasing your knowledge of Pepeha and Whakapapa.
  • Respond appropriately to simple and familiar instructions and simple questions.
  • Atuatanga - developing your understanding of our Atua and how they relate to today's world.
  • Write simple and familiar words, phrases and sentences using the conventions of written language, such as appropriate spelling and punctuation.
  • Maramataka Māori - Understanding the moon phases and how they interact with our daily lives.
  • Enhance your understanding by way of waiata (song) and karakia (recitation).
  • Puanga and Matariki - Knowledge of the Māori new year.
  • Develop their self confidence in Mana Wāhine (Leadership) roles. 

  • Wāhine Rongonui - Who are our wāhine rangatira of yesterday and today?
