Course Description

What will I learn?
The course studies a range of economic issues from employment, growth, inflation and trade.

Students will investigate the answers to questions such as:
• Am I entitled to sick leave and holiday pay if I only work part-time?
• Can my employer sack me without fair reason?
• When am I better to spend all my money?
• Why can't the Government just print more money?
• How does immigration create jobs for New Zealanders?
• Why does the value of the New Zealand dollar change?
• Are we really going to be "better off" than our parents?
• What is the cost of Economic Growth?

Students develop an awareness of the 'cause and effect', relationships and policies involved in these issues and their impact on various groups in the economy. It will enable them to understand the issues that impact on the New Zealand economy and the influence they have on the individual and their families.

Skills:
Communicating economic ideas and opinions through discussion, critical thinking, written material, visual display; working in group situations; interpreting information and drawing conclusions; using economic models; making basic calculations, percentage change, graphing skills; research using primary and secondary sources; problem-solving; self responsibility.

BYOD is very useful as we will be using Google classroom and resources are uploaded to the Google team drive. If a student does not have access to a Device we will endeavour to provide some access during class when necessary.


Recommended Prior Learning

You need not have completed Year 11 Economics. Students must have gained the required 10 credits in each of Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy.
