Course Description

This course covers the requirements for life, including microorganisms; sun and moon cycles and their effect on Earth; astronomical events or discoveries; and space travel.

This course will help you to decide whether there could be life on other planets, based upon the conditions needed by living things to survive.
You will learn about:
The life processes of all living things
How organisms on Earth have adapted to live in the most hostile environments (looking specifically at bacteria, as these live almost everywhere!) We will carry out experiments to find out what happens to bacteria when we grow them in different conditions.
How Earth is affected by the sun and moon, and our position in the solar system and galaxy.
What conditions are like on the planets that are nearest to us
How do we get into space, and what are conditions like once we get there? Focusing on rocketry and gravity - have you ever wondered how astronauts go to the toilet?? We will carry out an investigation into what makes the best rocket.
How we rely on essential elements such as carbon, and how this would affect life in space.

Possible pathways:
This course could lead into further studies in science in L2 and L3, especially L2 Earth and Space Science, but also Biology, and possibly Chemistry and Physics. There are also plenty of very cool university courses globally where you could build on this, or even go and work for RocketLab in Auckland or at the Mahia peninsula.

Recommended Prior Learning

Entry: this course is open to all Y11 students, regardless of your abilities in science. It would be nice if you had an interest in space and life in space, but even that is not necessary...
