Course Description
Teacher in Charge: N. Howes
Content/Skills:
Year 12 Health Education examines several common health issues, for adolescents and our society, and strategies we can apply to address these concerns. Alongside the teacher the cohort will select 3 of the following Achievement Standards to complete for the year giving them approximately 15 credits in total.
Managing Change (internal – 5 credits):
Students analyse the concepts of risk and protective factors that influence a person's resilience and ability to manage changes as well as strategies to build resilience. Students will interview a resilient role model to show their understanding in this standard.
Health Promotion (internal – 5 credits):
This is a student-centred process where each group selects a health issue within the school that impacts on the well-being of the school community. They carry out surveys, make plans and implement actions to bring about health-enhancing change. Groups will present their planned actions during a Health Expo Day in the aim to raise awareness of their issue.
Sexuality and Gender Issues (internal - 5 credits):
Students investigate the messages, issues, stereotypes and norms surrounding sexuality and gender within our society. They develop insight into the influences on gender and sexual identity, the impact of this on individuals and explore strategies that reflect social justice.
Adolescent Health Issue (external – 5 credits):
Students examine an adolescent health issue by looking at the influences, consequences and strategies of the issue. For example, stress management in relation to social media.
Interpersonal Issues (external – 4 credits):
Students examine how personal safety is put at risk in interpersonal relationships by looking at the influences, consequences and strategies of the issue. For example, bullying.
