Year 9 English

Course selection will be active from the 14th August 2020.

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: M. Northey

Year 9  “Finding Your Voice”

Students have four English periods per six day cycle. The year in Year 9 English will be split into four separate terms (replicating the Year 10 structure). This means students will be taken through four themes. Year 9 classes will all study Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”, a novel, and a film. The emphasis will be on practising lots of different writing voices, and learning that it is safe to express an opinion. Students will be exposed to a range of shorter text genres as well, as part of their thematic explorations.

The following strands are formally assessed in Year 9:

  • Creative Writing
  • Speaking (the “Romeo and Juliet” performance)
  • Listening

Teachers will cover other strands of the English Curriculum as well, but these will not be formally assessed. Our vision is for students to start building up an understanding of different writing genres: eg: epistolary, creative, poetry. The Year 9 course is rich in modelling. Collaborating to construct a shared voice is encouraged, and learning that it is safe to express an opinion.
