Level 2 History

Course Description

In Level 2 History, students will engage with the past in order to better understand the present and future. This course focuses on some of the contested events of the 20th Century and investigates why these events are controversial and how they continue to shape our lives today. It aims to develop students’ ability to think and write critically and to conduct targeted research.

  • Critical thinking- reasoning, interpreting information, explaining, identifying patterns and trends, synthesising information, making judgements based on evidence.

  • Conspiracies and Mysteries: the Erebus crash (Air NZ); President Kennedy's assassination; Marilyn Monroe's suicide.

  • Information literacy- identifying fact and opinion, making judgements about the quality of information, assessing the reliability of different sources of information such as websites.
  • Racism and conflict: Australia's lost generation; NZ dawn raids; the student protest in Soweto, South Africa; the Springbok Tour.

  • Communication skills- communicating effectively in a variety of formats: for example in small group and full class discussions; written work; visual formats.
  • Culture in crisis: protest movements in NZ - Vietnam, Bastion Point, the Hikoi, Nuclear free NZ; teen culture and moral outrage.
