Course Description

Year 9 Te Reo Māori for beginners is an absolute beginners course. By the end of the year students can understand te reo Māori that contains well-rehearsed sentence patterns and familiar vocabulary and can interact in predictable exchanges. They can read and write straightforward versions of what they have learned to say. They are aware of and understand some of the typical cultural conventions that operate in interpersonal communication. Students are developing an awareness of the processes involved in learning te reo Māori.

Please note that in this course students are required to learn and deliver a mihi.

  • Greet, farewell and acknowledge people and respond to greetings and acknowledgements.

  • Ask simple questions and give simple information.
  • Communicate about numbers, using days of the week, months and dates.
  • Initiate simple conversations in Te Reo Māori.

  • Communicate about personal information, such as name, parents' and grandparents' names, iwi, hapū, mountain and river, or home town and place of origin.
  • Write simple, familiar words, phrases, and sentences using spelling and punctuation conventions.
  • Communicate about time, weather, and seasons.
  • Write simple messages in Te Reo Māori.
