Year 11 Art - Visual

Course Description

Students will respond to the environment of Whangārei Heads. With the focus on an accessible subject matter within their own world, students will be able to readily play with media and develop skills when using a variety of different art-making techniques. Students will explore a sub-theme relating to either Surf Culture / Cultural Significance / Coastal Environment / Below the Waves. Students will develop, and critically reflect on successful media and compositions, think creatively and develop their ideas, with an understanding of contemporary art practice.

  • Creativity: You will be challenged to think of alternative solutions, use your own art-making experience to inform your next steps, use media with flair, re-interpret imagery in your own way and apply media in diverse ways.
  • Whangarei Heads:
Whatungarongaro te tangata toitu te whenua. As man disappears from sight, the land remains.
Students will investigate and create visual outcomes in response to the whenua surrounding Whangārei and our local histories. 

  • Decision Making: You will focus on extending your media knowledge, select artist models that extend your learning and make decisions about media, scale and technique. 
  • Drawing, etching, watercolour, cyanotype, acrylic paint, collage, photo manipulation.

  • Interpersonal Skills: You may work with others to develop your ideas and work together to achieve a final outcome.
  • Finished final works, along with your documentation of research, ideas and process in a workbook, will be presented as a 'mini-folio.
  • Visual Literacy: Use images to describe and express your ideas. Your work will relate to your own interpretation of the set theme.

All resources are supplied for use in class. * If students wish to have their own supply of material to use both in class and at home they may purchase the following: Paint Palette and Lid, No. 0 Taklon Round Paintbrush, No.4 Taklon Round Paintbrush, 2B and 6B Pencil, Black Fineline Pen (Available from Office Max)
