Externally Provided Trades Academies

There are 6 externally offered trades academies available to our Level 2 and 3 students at WGHS. These are Level 3 Business of Tourism Academy which the International Travel College (ITC) facilitate, Level 2/3 Hair and Beauty Academy, Level 2 Health Academy, Level 2/3 Automotive Academy, Level 3 Cookery Academy and Level 3 Food & Beverage Academy.

  • An 80% and higher attendance requirement will be essential to ensure students have the best chance of completing the following programmes.
  • Participation in one of the following trades academies is on top of your option selection. It is important students ensure they remain up-to-date with their in school class work while attending their selected academy.

International Travel College 

Level 3 Business of Tourism Academy 

This course is for those interested in a career in the tourism sector. Students will meet industry face to face and participate in a range of different site visits and activities which will expose them to many sectors of our amazing industry. We have a strong focus on communication, cultural awareness, enterprise & marketing, customer service, leadership, public speaking and presentation skills.  These are all valuable skills our industry demands of their future workforce.

Programme: 

• 30 Level 3 Credits 

• One day a week (every Friday) for 30 weeks at Northtec

Northtec 

Level 2/3 Hair and Beauty Academy 

This course is for students who are wishing to pursue a career in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy and to have a qualification which would allow them to pathway to NZC in Hairdressing L3 or NZC in Beauty Therapy L4. Graduates will have gained skills which would then allow them to further their study or to be employed in the Hair and Beauty industries.

Programme:

• 60 Level 2/Level 3 Credits (31 Level 2/29 Level 3)

• One day a week (every Friday) and two 5-day block courses during the school holidays

Level 2 Health Academy 

This pathway will link students at secondary school with careers in the health industry and pathways through tertiary to those health career opportunities such as a carer, paramedic, nurse, midwife etc.

Programme:

• 26 credits (approx.) – where a total of 20 Level 2 Social and Community Services sector related credits would be achieved contributing to NCEA and a Vocational Pathway Award

• Practical components of learning will include nursing simulation as well as field trips (subject to Covid restriction policies) to industry

• Students must be engaged with other Science and English subjects at school to ensure transition to Level 3 UE

• One day a week (every Wednesday) for 24 weeks

Level 2/3 Automotive Academy 

A combination of Level 2 and Level 3 unit standards that will allow students to progress into an automotive career pathway such as vehicle repair servicing, motor industry apprenticeship, or a further specialist apprenticeship.

Programme:

• 59 Level 2/Level 3 NCEA credits (27 Level 2/32 Level 3 credits)

• Two days a week (Thursday and Friday)

• Students will be provided with all appropriate course materials

Level 3 Cookery Academy 

This programme will give students the basic skills needed to actively participate in commercial kitchen operation. For students interested in following the hospitality pathway with the possibility of becoming a chef.

Programme:

• 45 Level 3 credits

• One day a week (every Monday) and one 4-day block course during the school holidays

• Students will be provided with all appropriate course materials (including basic knife set)

Level 3 Food & Beverage Academy 

This programme is for those wishing to pursue a career in Hospitality and to have a qualification which would allow them to pathway to NZC in Food and Beverage L4. Graduates will have gained skills which would then allow them to further study or to be employed in the service industry, particularly in Hospitality.

Programme:

• 55 Level 2/3 credits (8 Level 2/47 Level 3)

• One day a week (every Monday) and a three-day block course during term 1
